Dear Family!

The theme of ‘Hope’ is very powerful in the readings today. One longs for ‘hope’ (a virtue) in times of despair, in times of utter powerlessness, in times of fear and/or even in times of separation from our loved ones. When we are disoriented and confused as to what future holds it is the virtue of hope that guides us to peace and comfort.

When differences of opinion exist, the Church chose the path of dialogue and fair treatment of each other. Mutual respect and a strong prayer life could bring about the virtue of Hope.

The result is the birth of Jerusalem Council (1st Reading). When Hope manifests, God’s glory is revealed.

The Church understands that “it always is in need of reform” (Saint Pope John XXIII). From the Council of Jerusalem to the present there were/are changes, challenges and reforms in the Church. The Church continues to be the sign of hope because of the promise of Jesus - the promise of the Holy Spirit. The disoriented, confused Apostles saw the radiance of the virtue of Hope in the Person of the Holy Spirit.

Inauguration Mass for the Beginning of the Pontificate of Pope Leo XIV: Pope Leo XIV was elected on May 8th. On the morning of the 18th at 10am (Time in Rome) Pope Leo XIV celebrated mass for the beginning of his Pontificate in St. Peter’s Basilica. On the 20th he took possession of the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls; On the 25th of May he took possession of the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran which is also the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome and the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major, where Pope Francis is buried.

Special Mass for the New Pope: After the Inauguration Mass by the Pope on Sunday, May 18th we had a thanksgiving mass for the new pope on Tuesday, May 20th at 6:45am. We are grateful to God for the successful Conclave and in giving us a wonderful person as our new Vicar of Christ. Please continue to remember our Pope in your daily prayers.

May 20th – 1700th Anniversary of the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea.
Convened in 325 A.D., the Council of Nicaea was the first to unite the entire Christian world. It was there, after much debate, that the universal creed was first proclaimed. The council fathers affirmed that the Son is consubstantial with the Father, declaring that there is no difference in divinity between God the Father and God the Son and confirming the Catholic belief in the Trinity. To mark the occasion, the Vatican has released a document titled “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.”

Memorial Day Mass at the Cemetery: At every Federal Holiday we have mass at 9am in our Church. This memorial day we will have the 9am Mass at the church and also in our Cemetery at 10am. Please come to our Cemetery and honor our patriots who gave their lives for our country.

Diocesan Jubilee Pilgrimage to the National Shrine in Washington, DC, (Sept. 20)

World Children’s Day: Pope Francis established the First World Day of Children in May 2024. Pope Francis said last year on this special day, “I want to speak to each of you, dear children, because, as the Bible teaches us, and as Jesus showed so often, “You are precious” in God’s eyes (Is 43:4). There will be a special blessing for all children at all weekend mass of 24th and 25th of May. Please bring all your children for mass and pray for them.

150th Anniversary of Catholic Education in Phillipsburg
As the anniversary approaches near, there are preliminary preparations that need to happen. We need to form a leadership team to plan and execute. We are looking for volunteers to be part of the leadership team. All are welcome!

Jubilee Year 2025: (Jubilees in May 2025)
So far in May the following Jubilees have taken place: May 1st - 4th Jubilee of Workers; 4th & 5th Jubilee of Entrepreneurs; 10th & 11th Jubilee of Bands & Popular Music; 12th – 14th Jubilee of the Eastern Churches; 16th – 17th Jubilee of Confraternities. The last will be from May 30th to June 1st - Jubilee of Families, Grandparents and the Elderly.

¡Querida familia!

El tema de la esperanza es muy poderoso en las lecturas de hoy. Anhelamos la esperanza (una virtud) en momentos de desesperación, de absoluta impotencia, de miedo o incluso de separación de nuestros seres queridos. Cuando nos sentimos desorientados y confundidos sobre el futuro, la virtud de la esperanza nos guía hacia la paz y el consuelo.

Cuando existen diferencias de opinión, la Iglesia opta por el diálogo y el trato justo. El respeto mutuo y una vida de oración intensa pueden propiciar la virtud de la esperanza. El resultado es el nacimiento del Concilio de Jerusalén (1.ª lectura). Cuando la esperanza se manifiesta, se revela la gloria de Dios.

La Iglesia comprende que «siempre necesita reformas» (San Juan XXIII). Desde el Concilio de Jerusalén hasta la actualidad, ha habido/hay cambios, desafíos y reformas en la Iglesia. La Iglesia sigue siendo un signo de esperanza gracias a la promesa de Jesús: la promesa del Espíritu Santo. Los apóstoles, desorientados y confundidos, vieron el resplandor de la virtud de la esperanza en la Persona del Espíritu Santo.

Misa de Inauguración del Pontificado del Papa León XIV: El Papa León XIV fue elegido el 8 de mayo. El día 18, a las 10:00 (hora de Roma), celebró la misa de inicio de su Pontificado en la Basílica de San Pedro. El día 20 tomó posesión de la Basílica Papal de San Pablo Extramuros; el 25 de mayo tomó posesión de la Basílica Papal de San Juan de Letrán, que también es la Catedral del Obispo de Roma y la Basílica Papal de Santa María la Mayor, donde está enterrado el Papa Francisco.

Misa especial por el nuevo Papa: Tras la Misa de Inauguración del Papa el domingo 18 de mayo, celebramos una misa de acción de gracias por el nuevo Papa el martes 20 de mayo a las 6:45 am. Agradecemos a Dios por el éxito del Cónclave y por habernos dado una persona maravillosa como nuestro nuevo Vicario de Cristo. Por favor, sigan recordando a nuestro Papa en sus oraciones diarias.

20 de mayo – 1700 Aniversario del Concilio Ecuménico de Nicea.
Convocado en el año 325 d. c., el Concilio de Nicea fue el primero en unir a todo el mundo cristiano. Fue allí, tras un largo debate, donde se proclamó por primera vez el credo universal. Los padres conciliares afirmaron que el Hijo es consustancial con el Padre, declarando que no hay diferencia de divinidad entre Dios Padre y Dios Hijo, y confirmando la creencia católica en la Trinidad. Para conmemorar la ocasión, el Vaticano publicó un documento titulado «Jesucristo, Hijo de Dios, Salvador».

Misa del Día de los Caídos en el Cementerio: En cada día festivo federal, celebramos misa a las 9:00 am en nuestra iglesia. Este Día de los Caídos, celebraremos la misa a las 9:00 am en la iglesia y también en nuestro cementerio a las 10:00 am. Por favor, vengan a nuestro cementerio y honren a nuestros patriotas que dieron su vida por nuestro país.

Peregrinación Jubilar Diocesana al Santuario Nacional en Washington, DC, (20 de septiembre)

Día Mundial del Niño: El Papa Francisco instituyó el Primer Día Mundial del Niño en mayo de 2024. El año pasado, en este día tan especial, el Papa Francisco dijo: «Quiero hablarle a cada uno de ustedes, queridos niños, porque, como nos enseña la Biblia y como Jesús demostró tantas veces, “son preciosos” a los ojos de Dios (Is 43,4)». Habrá una bendición especial para todos los niños en la misa del fin de semana del 24 y 25 de mayo. Por favor, traigan a todos sus hijos a la misa y oren por ellos.

150.º Aniversario de la Educación Católica en Phillipsburg
A medida que se acerca el aniversario, es necesario realizar preparativos preliminares. Necesitamos formar un equipo de liderazgo para planificar y ejecutar. Buscamos voluntarios para formar parte del equipo de liderazgo. ¡Todos son bienvenidos!

En lo que va de mayo se han celebrado los siguientes Jubileos: del 1 al 4 de mayo: Jubileo de los Trabajadores; del 4 al 5: Jubileo de los Empresarios; del 10 al 11: Jubileo de las Bandas y la Música Popular; del 12 al 14: Jubileo de las Iglesias Orientales; del 16 al 17: Jubileo de las Cofradías. El último será del 30 de mayo al 1 de junio: Jubileo de las Familias, los Abuelos y los Ancianos.
