Dear Family!

We are drawing near to the end of the Cycle C (Gospel of Luke). The theme continues to focus on prayer. The 1st reading opens our minds and hearts to the reality that ‘the humble man’s prayer pierces the clouds’ is fulfilled in the tax-collector in the Gospel. I was drawn to the conclusion that Jesus makes here - ‘the latter went home justified’.

We look for justification only from God. We need to make the journey to the presence of God in order to experience the justification. Once we are in the presence of God, we open our hearts to receive the justification from God. Therefore, our prayers are aimed at being justified with God and more over bringing that treasure of justification home to our family, to our loved ones.

This brings us to the question to what justification means. First as foremost justification is our total restoration into a life of union with God. (This doctrine is detailed in Saint Paul’s letter to Romans). Though the readings talk about humility in prayer, we need to keep in mind that justification is accessed by our believing in Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Saint Paul in the second reading takes on humility in his ministry as a servant of God. He says, ‘My life is a libation’ - poured out for people. Being filled with the Holy Spirit each day is one way to attain the humility we desire. God desires us and requires us to be holy just as He requires us to humble even though we are not perfect. Do we go home ‘justified’?

The Pope has appointed Bishop James Checchio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans: A ‘coadjutor’ bishop is appointed to assist the diocesan bishop until his retirement. When the Archbishop of New Orleans retires and the Holy Father accepts his resignation, Bishop Checchio automatically becomes the Archbishop of New Orleans. In the meantime, Bishop Checchio becomes the Administrator of the Diocese of Metuchen. A Mass of Farewell for Bishop Checchio will be on November 1st at 11am at the Cathedral. Please keep our Bishop in our prayers!

All Saints and All Souls Day 2025: The Solemnity of All Saints (November 1st ) falls on Saturday and so will not have the weight of a Holy Day of Obligation this year. Since it is not a day of Obligation we will not have a vigil mass for All Saints on Friday. All Souls Day (November 2nd) will be on Sunday this year including an additional mass on Saturday Night at 7pm for the people who have passed away recently in our parish.

Funeral Ministry: The Legion of Mary will be involved in the Funeral Ministry. I thank them for their generous contribution in being involved in this important ministry. More details will follow.

Mercy Hall Building Updates: Please pray for the boiler project. It might cost us around $70,000 to $80,000. The Church doors need some proper care and repair. We have been getting different quotes for these projects. Please consider donating to these projects. When you send in the check made out to our Parish, please mention that it is for the Boiler or Church Doors. Thank you for your generosity! We are also working on the sound system for our church.

30º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Querida familia!

Nos acercamos al final del Ciclo C (Evangelio de Lucas). El tema continúa centrándose en la oración. La primera lectura nos abre la mente y el corazón a la realidad de que «la oración del humilde traspasa las nubes» se cumple en el publicano del Evangelio. Me llamó la atención la conclusión que Jesús plantea aquí: «este regresó a casa justificado».

Buscamos la justificación solo en Dios. Necesitamos llegar a la presencia de Dios para experimentarla. Una vez en la presencia de Dios, abrimos nuestro corazón para recibirla. Por lo tanto, nuestras oraciones buscan ser justificados ante Dios y, sobre todo, llevar ese tesoro de la justificación a nuestra familia y a nuestros seres queridos.

Esto nos lleva a la pregunta sobre el significado de la justificación. En primer lugar, la justificación es nuestra restauración total a una vida de unión con Dios. (Esta doctrina se detalla en la carta de San Pablo a los Romanos). Aunque las lecturas hablan de la humildad en la oración, debemos recordar que la justificación se obtiene al creer en Jesús como nuestro Señor y Salvador.

En la segunda lectura, San Pablo aborda la humildad en su ministerio como siervo de Dios. Dice: «Mi vida es una libación», derramada por los hombres. Ser llenos del Espíritu Santo cada día es una manera de alcanzar la humildad que anhelamos. Dios nos desea y nos exige ser santos, así como nos exige ser humildes, aunque no seamos perfectos. ¿Regresamos a casa «justificados»?

El Papa ha nombrado al obispo James Checchio arzobispo coadjutor de Nueva Orleans: Se nombra un obispo coadjutor para asistir al obispo diocesano hasta su jubilación. Cuando el arzobispo de Nueva Orleans se jubila y el Santo Padre acepta su renuncia, el obispo Checchio se convierte automáticamente en arzobispo de Nueva Orleans. Mientras tanto, el obispo Checchio se convierte en el administrador de la Diócesis de Metuchen. La misa de despedida del obispo Checchio se celebrará el 1 de noviembre a las 11:00 am en la Catedral. ¡Por favor, mantengan a nuestro obispo en nuestras oraciones!

Día de Todos los Santos y Día de los Fieles Difuntos 2025: La Solemnidad de Todos los Santos (1 de noviembre) cae en sábado, por lo que este año no tendrá la consideración de Día de Precepto. Al no ser día de precepto, no tendremos misa de vigilia por Todos los Santos el viernes. El Día de los Fieles Difuntos (2 de noviembre) se celebrará en domingo este año, incluyendo una misa adicional el sábado por la noche a las 7pm en memoria de los fallecidos recientemente en nuestra parroquia.

Ministerio Funerario: La Legión de María participará en el Ministerio Funerario. Les agradezco su generosa contribución al participar en este importante ministerio. Próximamente les daré más detalles.

Las puertas de la iglesia necesitan un buen mantenimiento y reparación. Hemos recibido diferentes presupuestos para estos proyectos. Por favor, consideren donar. Cuando envíen el cheque a nombre de nuestra parroquia, por favor mencionen que es para la caldera o las puertas de la iglesia. ¡Gracias por su generosidad! También estamos trabajando en el sistema de sonido de nuestra iglesia.
