Dear Family!

Reflecting on the Gospel this Sunday, St. Ambrose wrote, “The superscription is written and placed above, not below the cross, because the government is upon his shoulders. What is this government if not his eternal power and Godhead? When asked, “Who are you?” he replied, “The beginning, who also speaks to you.” Let us read this superscription. “Jesus of Nazareth,” it says, “The King of the Jews.”

The superscription is fittingly above the cross because Christ’s kingdom does not belong to his human body but to his divine authority. The superscription is also fittingly above the cross, because although the Lord Jesus was on the cross, he shines above the cross with the majesty of a king.” (Exposition of the Gospel of Luke)

The Universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King this Sunday. As we know from the gospels that Jesus revealed His Kingdom is not of this world. Yet Jesus taught us to pray for that coming of that Kingdom which is not of this world (Your Kingdom come!). When Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925, he wanted the Church to experience the peace of Christ. (Pax Christi in regno Christi). We live in that peace when we surrender our lives to Christ thus Christ rules our lives.

As Christ is the King, how do we participate in Christ’s Kingly Office? The Catechism teaches us “By his obedience unto death,444 Christ communicated to his disciples the gift of royal freedom, so that they might "by the self-abnegation of a holy life, overcome the reign of sin in themselves”: Quoting St. Ambrose the Catechism continues, “That man is rightly called a king who makes his own body an obedient subject and, by governing himself with suitable rigor, refuses to let his passions breed rebellion in his soul, for he exercises a kind of royal power over himself. And because he knows how to rule his own person as king, so too does he sit as its judge. He will not let himself be imprisoned by sin or thrown headlong into wickedness.”

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving! ’Thanksgiving’ is one great time our parish helps the less fortunate, the poor and the needy in our community. We thank all our volunteers and ministries who help the poor to celebrate a meaningful Thanksgiving this year. Thank you for all your food donations! There is no better way to celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King than to serve our people like our Lord and King Jesus.

Pastor’s Appeal: I am forever grateful to all of you for your generosity. Thank you for all you donations! As announced at all masses how important it is to get Mercy Hall ready for the winter, we need to get the Boiler fixed. It is our primary concern. As shown in the pictures of this year the Pastor’s Appeal, the doors of the church need to be repaired by a professional company. Please prayerfully consider donating to these projects if you have not done so!

Our Diocese announced its Administrator on Nov 20th: We are so grateful to Bishop Checchio and his ministry with us for the past nine years. The College of Consultors fulfilled their Canonical Duty and elected a Diocesan Administrator on Thursday Morning (Nov 20th). The Administrator will run the diocese till we get a new Bishop. Let us all keep the new Administrator in our prayers!

Advent Penance Service is on Tuesday, Dec. 9th: I invite all the parents to bring the children for the Penance Service with confessions for Faith Formation Families at 4:30pm IN THE CHURCH. Then at 7pm there will be the Parish Penance Service for all! Please come with your families. There will be around six priests to hear confessions.

The Diocese received a Thank You note from the National Shrine: Msgr. Walter Rossi, the Rector of the National Shrine in Washington, DC thanks the Diocese of Metuchen for the Special Collection for its 100th Anniversary. The collection is totaled $100,000. Msgr. Rossi said, “The goodness of the faithful of Metuchen is truly appreciated”.

¡Querida familia!

Reflexionando sobre el Evangelio de este domingo, San Ambrosio escribió: «La inscripción está escrita y colocada encima, no debajo de la cruz, porque el gobierno está sobre sus hombros. ¿Qué es este gobierno sino su eterno poder y divinidad? Cuando le preguntaron: “¿Quién eres?”, respondió: “El principio, que también habla contigo”. Leamos esta inscripción: “Jesús de Nazaret”, dice, “El Rey de los Judíos”. La inscripción está apropiadamente encima de la cruz porque el reino de Cristo no pertenece a su cuerpo humano, sino a su autoridad divina. La Iglesia Universal celebra este domingo la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Como sabemos por los evangelios, Jesús reveló que su Reino no es de este mundo. Sin embargo, Jesús nos enseñó a orar por la venida de ese Reino que no es de este mundo (¡Venga tu Reino!). Cuando el Papa Pío XI instituyó esta fiesta en 1925, deseaba que la Iglesia experimentara la paz de Cristo (Pax Christi in regno Christi). Vivimos en esa paz cuando entregamos nuestras vidas a Cristo, de modo que Cristo gobierna nuestras vidas.

Siendo Cristo Rey, ¿cómo participamos en su Realeza? El Catecismo nos enseña: «Por su obediencia hasta la muerte,444 Cristo comunicó a sus discípulos el don de la libertad real, para que, mediante la abnegación de una vida santa, pudieran vencer el dominio del pecado en sí mismos». Citando a San Ambrosio, el Catecismo continúa: «Con razón se llama rey a aquel que somete su cuerpo a la obediencia y, gobernándose con el rigor necesario, se niega a que sus pasiones engendren rebeldía en su alma, pues ejerce sobre sí mismo una suerte de poder real. Y puesto que sabe gobernarse como rey, también se sienta como su juez. No se dejará aprisionar por el pecado ni caer de cabeza en la maldad».

¡Les deseamos a todos un feliz Día de Acción de Gracias! Esta festividad es una ocasión especial en la que nuestra parroquia ayuda a los menos afortunados, a los pobres y a los necesitados de nuestra comunidad. Agradecemos a todos nuestros voluntarios y ministerios que ayudan a los pobres a celebrar un Día de Acción de Gracias. ¡Gracias por todas sus donaciones de alimentos! No hay mejor manera de celebrar la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey que sirviendo a nuestra gente como nuestro Señor y Rey Jesucristo.

Apelación del Pastor: Les agradezco infinitamente su generosidad. ¡Gracias por todas sus donaciones! Como se anuncia en todas las misas, es fundamental preparar Mercy Hall para el invierno, y necesitamos reparar la calefacción. Es nuestra principal prioridad. Como se mostraron en las fotos de la Apelación del Pastor de este año, las puertas de la iglesia necesitan ser reparadas por una empresa profesional. Si aún no lo han hecho, les pido que consideren donar para estos proyectos.

Nuestra diócesis anunció a su administrador el 20 de noviembre: Estamos muy agradecidos al obispo Checchio por su ministerio con nosotros durante los últimos nueve años. El Colegio de Consultores cumplió con su deber canónico y eligió un administrador diocesano el jueves por la mañana (20 de noviembre). El administrador dirigirá la diócesis hasta que tengamos un nuevo obispo. ¡Oremos todos por el nuevo administrador!

Servicio de Penitencia de Adviento el martes 9 de diciembre: Invito a todos los padres a traer a sus hijos al Servicio de Penitencia con confesiones para familias de Formación en la Fe a las 4:30 pm. EN LA IGLESIA. A las 7 pm se celebrará el Servicio de Penitencia Parroquial para todos. Les invitamos a venir con sus familias. Habrá alrededor de seis sacerdotes para escuchar confesiones.

La Diócesis recibió una nota de agradecimiento del Santuario Nacional: Monseñor Walter Rossi, rector del Santuario Nacional en Washington D. C., agradece a la Diócesis de Metuchen la colecta especial realizada con motivo de su centenario. La colecta ascendió a $100,000.00 dólares. Monseñor Rossi expresó: «Agradecemos profundamente la generosidad de los fieles de Metuchen».
