The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Dear Family!

“The most holy Church of the Lateran, the mother and head of all the churches of the city and the world!” These words, in Latin, greet every pilgrim entering through the front door of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in Rome and clearly proclaim the Lateran’s significance in Christianity.

We call the Lateran the mother of every church edifice because it was the first legalized Christian Church in history and, as Pope Francis said a few years ago, “As there is a mother in a family, so does the venerated Cathedral of the Lateran become a ‘mother ’to the churches of all the communities of the Catholic world.” It is the head, because Rome is the principal Church of the principal local Church in the world, the Diocese of Rome, the see of St. Peter, the vicar on earth of the Head of the Mystical Body. The Lateran, not St. Peter’s, is the Pope’s Cathedral, where his cathedra, the chair symbolic of his teaching authority, rests. The Lateran, not the Vatican, is where the Popes resided for the first millennium of legalized Christianity (324- 1308). This is the reason why on November 9th every year not just the Diocese of Rome but the whole Roman Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the dedication of their Head and Mother. “With this feast,” Pope Francis said, “we profess, in the unity of the faith, the bond of communion that all the local Churches, spread throughout the earth, has with the Church of Rome and with its Bishop, the successor to Peter.” St. John Lateran is, we can loosely say, the Cathedral of the world.

The Readings for this great feast help us to move from gratitude for treasured physical buildings, like the Lateran Basilica, to reflection on the true nature of the Church. Although we call places of worship “churches,” in actual fact the true sanctuary or place of worship is the Body of Christ, both in the sense of Christ’s personal body and in his mystical body, which consists of every Christian united to him by faith and the sacraments.

The Pope has appointed Bishop James Checchio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans: The Church of Metuchen had a farewell Mass for Bishop Checchio on November 1st at the Cathedral. Please keep our Bishop in our prayers! We will continue to mention Bishop Checchio’s name until the afternoon of Tuesday, November 18th. (That is when Bishop Checchio will be named the Coadjutor Bishop of New Orleans). Our diocese become vacant, and we will not mention Bishop’s name until we get a new Bishop.

As I have been sharing with you all these weeks and months of needing to replace the boiler in Mercy Hall and repair our Church doors, we have made good decision in choosing the right companies who can do the job for us. Dedicación De La Basílica De Letrán

¡Querida familia!

“¡La santísima Iglesia de Letrán, madre y cabeza de todas las iglesias de la ciudad y del mundo!” Estas palabras, en latín, dan la bienvenida a todo peregrino que entra por la puerta principal de la Archibasílica de San Juan de Letrán en Roma y proclaman claramente la importancia de Letrán en el cristianismo.

Llamamos a Letrán la madre de toda iglesia porque fue la primera iglesia cristiana legalizada en la historia y, como dijo el Papa Francisco hace algunos años: «Así como hay una madre en una familia, la venerada Catedral de Letrán se convierte en “madre” de las iglesias de todas las comunidades del mundo católico». Es la cabeza, porque Roma es la iglesia principal de la principal iglesia local del mundo, la Diócesis de Roma, sede de San Pedro, vicario en la tierra de la Cabeza del Cuerpo Místico. Letrán, no San Pedro, es la catedral del Papa, donde reposa su cátedra, la silla que simboliza su autoridad magisterial. Letrán, no el Vaticano, es donde residieron los Papas durante el primer milenio del cristianismo legalizado (324-1308). Por eso, cada 9 de noviembre, no solo la Diócesis de Roma, sino toda la Iglesia católica romana celebra la fiesta de la dedicación de su Cabeza y Madre. «Con esta fiesta», dijo el Papa Francisco, «profesamos, en la unidad de la fe, el vínculo de comunión que todas las Iglesias locales, repartidas por toda la tierra, tienen con la Iglesia de Roma y con su Obispo, sucesor de Pedro». San Juan de Letrán es, podríamos decir, la catedral del mundo.

Las lecturas de esta gran fiesta nos ayudan a transitar de la gratitud por valiosos edificios físicos, como la Basílica de Letrán, a la reflexión sobre la verdadera naturaleza de la Iglesia. Si bien llamamos «iglesias» a los lugares de culto, en realidad el verdadero santuario o lugar de culto es el Cuerpo de Cristo, tanto en el sentido de su cuerpo personal como en su cuerpo místico, que consiste en cada cristiano unido a él por la fe y los sacramentos.

El Papa ha nombrado al obispo James Checchio arzobispo coadjutor de Nueva Orleans: La iglesia de Metuchen celebró una misa de despedida para el obispo Checchio el 1 de noviembre en la catedral. ¡Oremos por nuestro obispo! Seguiremos recordando al obispo Checchio hasta la tarde del martes 18 de noviembre. (En ese momento, el obispo Checchio será nombrado obispo coadjutor de Nueva Orleans). Nuestra diócesis quedará vacante y no mencionaremos el nombre del obispo hasta que tengamos uno nuevo.

Durante estas semanas y meses, les he estado informando sobre la necesidad de reemplazar la caldera en el Salón de la Misericordia y reparar las puertas de nuestra iglesia. Hemos tomado la decisión correcta al elegir a las empresas adecuadas para realizar el trabajo. Les pido que continúen apoyándonos y orando por todos nuestros proyectos en la iglesia y la escuela.
