Dear Family!

Welcome to the Ordinary Season! The readings still resonate the festive mood of the Baptism of the Lord. As the Evangelist John introduces various titles of Jesus throughout the Gospel, one title stands out: Jesus as the Lamb. Why the Lamb? The central feature of the Jewish Passover feast was the lamb which was eaten during the Passover meal. When the angel of God came to destroy all the firstborn, it “passed over” the houses of the Israelites, which had been smeared with the lamb’s blood. This became then a symbol of liberation.

Jesus is both the offeror of the sacrifice and its victim, and his death and resurrection inaugurate a New Covenant between God and his people. It is perhaps significant that in all the gospel accounts of the Last Supper there is no mention of a lamb being eaten during the meal. The title ‘Lamb of God’ also recalls the suffering servant led like a lamb to the slaughter which we read about in Isaiah (53:7,10). In Revelation, too, we read of the victorious apocalyptic lamb who will destroy the evil in the world (Revelation 5-7; 17:14).

The Catechism teaches us, "After agreeing to baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at Jesus and pointed him out as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”. By doing so, he reveals that Jesus is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the sin of the multitudes, and also the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of Israel's redemption at the first Passover. Christ's whole life expresses his mission: "to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (CCC 608)

We have been waiting patiently for the contractors to get all the needed parts to do the job. The same applies for the Church Doors. A contract has been signed also. Exploring Faith: Thanks to the Legion of Mary for hosting this event. We all need to constantly update our learning especially learning about our faith. There are ways to build community, and this is one of them - to come together and share what we believe and learn from each other. Though in the initial stage, this group can develop into a formidable strength to our parish when we formalize the topics discussed and follow them up with action. Please come and be part of it!

Filipino Catholics Gathering Feb 21st: There will be a gathering of all Filipinos on Saturday, February 21st, after the 4:30pm Mass - a meet and greet session for parish involvement and ministry.

Rite of Election: Our Cathedral will have the Rite of Election on the 1st Sunday of Lent (February 22nd). We will be sending our OCIA Catechumens to this event and as a parish it is our duty to pray for them!

There are also a few minor projects in all our buildings: school classroom work, Mercy Hall painting work, getting heat in the Sacristy of the Church and some basic repair work in the rectory. I thank all our volunteers, especially those who are involved in these projects. Please pray for all these works!

2º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Querida familia!

¡Bienvenidos al Tiempo Ordinario! Las lecturas aún reflejan el ambiente festivo del Bautismo del Señor. A lo largo del Evangelio, el evangelista Juan presenta diversos títulos para Jesús, pero uno destaca: Jesús como el Cordero. ¿Por qué el Cordero? El elemento central de la fiesta judía de la Pascua era el cordero que se consumía durante la cena pascual. Cuando el ángel de Dios vino a destruir a todos los primogénitos, "pasó de largo" por las casas de los israelitas, que habían sido marcadas con la sangre del cordero. Esto se convirtió, entonces, en un símbolo de liberación.

Jesús es a la vez quien ofrece el sacrificio y la víctima, y su muerte y resurrección inauguran una Nueva Alianza entre Dios y su pueblo. Quizás sea significativo que en todos los relatos evangélicos de la Última Cena no se mencione que se comiera un cordero durante la comida. El título de «Cordero de Dios» también evoca al siervo sufriente, llevado como cordero al matadero, del que leemos en Isaías (53:7, 10). En el Apocalipsis, también leemos sobre el cordero apocalíptico victorioso que destruirá el mal en el mundo (Apocalipsis 5-7; 17:14).

El Catecismo nos enseña: «Después de aceptar ser bautizado junto con los pecadores, Juan el Bautista miró a Jesús y lo señaló como el "Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo". Al hacerlo, revela que Jesús es al mismo tiempo el Siervo sufriente que se deja conducir silenciosamente al sacrificio y que carga con el pecado de la multitud, y también el Cordero Pascual, símbolo de la redención de Israel en la primera Pascua. Toda la vida de Cristo expresa su misión: "servir y dar su vida en rescate por muchos"» (CIC 608).

Calefacción Mercy Hall: ¡Ya se ha firmado el contrato y, con su apoyo y oraciones, hemos comenzado este proyecto! Estamos esperando pacientemente a que los contratistas consiguieran todas las piezas necesarias para realizar el trabajo. Lo mismo ocurre con las puertas de la iglesia. También se ha firmado un contrato. ¡Ustedes han hecho esto posible para la parroquia con sus oraciones y donaciones! ¡Gracias! Les mantendremos informados periódicamente sobre estos proyectos.

Explorando la fe: Gracias a la Legión de María por organizar este evento. Todos necesitamos actualizar constantemente nuestros conocimientos, especialmente en lo que respecta a nuestra fe. Hay maneras de construir comunidad, y esta es una de ellas: reunirnos, compartir nuestras creencias y aprender unos de otros. Aunque se encuentra en su etapa inicial, este grupo puede convertirse en una fuerza formidable para nuestra parroquia si formalizamos los temas tratados y los llevamos a la práctica. ¡Los invitamos a participar!

Encuentro de católicos filipinos el 21 de febrero: El sábado 21 de febrero, después de la misa de las 4:30 pm, se llevará a cabo un encuentro para todos los filipinos, con el fin de conocerse y participar en las actividades y ministerios de la parroquia.

Rito de Elección: Nuestra catedral celebrará el Rito de Elección el primer domingo de Cuaresma (22 de febrero). Enviaremos a nuestros catecúmenos del OCIA a este evento, ¡y como parroquia es nuestro deber orar por ellos!

También tenemos algunos proyectos menores en todos nuestros edificios: trabajos en las aulas de la escuela, pintura en el Mercy Hall, instalación de calefacción en la sacristía de la iglesia y algunas reparaciones básicas en la casa parroquial. Agradezco a todos nuestros voluntarios, especialmente a quienes participan en estos proyectos. ¡Por favor, oren por todas estas obras!
