The Baptism of the Lord

Dear Family!

With today’s liturgy (The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord), we conclude the Season of Christmas. On Monday we begin the Ordinary Time. Jesus’ baptism by John was the acceptance and the beginning of his mission as God’s suffering servant (1st Reading Today). Jesus identifies himself with the sinful humanity and begins his mission to bring salvation to our fallen nature.

‘To baptize’ means to immerse or to plunge. Pope Benedict taught, “Jesus loaded the burden of all humanity’s guilt upon his shoulders; he bore it down into the depths of the Jordan. He inaugurated his public activity by stepping into the place of sinners. His inaugural gesture is an anticipation of the cross.” As Jesus immerses or plunges into the water the ‘evil one’ feels a sigh of relief. Little that he knows that redemption is at hand; baptism leads us to life eternal.

Jesus’ baptism reminds us also of our own mission. As Jesus identifies Himself with our sinful human nature at the time of baptism, we identify ourselves with God’s divine nature at the time of our own baptism (or the renewal of our baptismal promises). As Jesus takes upon Himself a mission and ministry to bring salvation to humanity at the time of baptism, we participate in Jesus’ common mission at the time of our own baptism (Common priesthood).

Is baptism just a ritual? What are the graces and blessings we received at the time of our baptism? What does my own baptism encourage me to realize in my Christian Identity and life? “Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other Sacraments.” (CCC 1213).

Pastor’s Appeal - Thanks to all of you for your efforts: I am forever grateful to all of you for your generosity. Thank you for all your donations! Mercy Hall boiler situation has been a huge concern this year as we have been repairing the boiler for so many years and reached a point where we couldn’t do it anymore. The contract has been signed now and with your support and prayers we have begun this project! As part of this year’s Pastor’s Appeal, the second and the last project for this year is the Church Doors. A Contract has also been, and we hope to complete repairing the church doors in the early part of January 2026. You have made this possible for the parish with your prayers and donations! Thank you!

Conclusion of the Jubilee YearThe Jubilee of Hope concluded by Pope Leo on January 6th (Solemnity of the Epiphany). In his homily the pope mentioned, “The Holy Door of this Basilica, which today is the last to be closed, has seen a stream of innumerable men and women, pilgrims of hope, journeying toward the new Jerusalem, the city whose doors are always open (cf. Rev 21:25). Who were these men and women, and what motivated them? At the end of this Jubilee year, the spiritual searching of our contemporaries, much richer than perhaps we can comprehend, invites us to earnest reflection. Millions of them crossed the threshold of the Church. What did they find? What was in their hearts, their questions, their feelings? Yes, the Magi still exist today. They are the people who sense the need to go out and search, accepting the risks associated with their journey, especially in a troubled world like ours that may be unpleasant and dangerous in many ways.” And at the end of the homily, the pope also invited everyone with these words, “Dear brothers and sisters, it is wonderful to become pilgrims of hope. It is wonderful for us to continue to be pilgrims together! The faithfulness of God continues to amaze us. If we do not reduce our churches to monuments, if our communities are homes, if we stand united and resist the flattery and seduction of those in power, then we will be the generation of a new dawn.”

Special thanks to Our Choir, Decoration Ministry, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Sacristans, Linen Ladies, Altar Servers and all Clergy: I thank all the members of our Parish Choir and The Hispanic Choir for all the hours sacrificed in preparation and worship to glorify God and help people pray! Thank you for your dedicated service to God and Community! The Decoration Committee has done so well throughout the year, taking care of flowers, plants, decorations, linen etc. Thank you for all your efforts to keep the church beautiful and providing people with a good ambience. My heart goes out to all our volunteers who keep the Church alive by their sacrifices! Thank you all! May we all be filled with God’s grace to renew our commitment to God and Church as we begin the New Year!

Bautismo Del Señor

¡Querida familia!

Con la liturgia de hoy (la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor), concluimos el Tiempo de Navidad. El lunes comenzamos el Tiempo Ordinario. El bautismo de Jesús por Juan fue la aceptación y el inicio de su misión como siervo sufriente de Dios (Primera Lectura de hoy). Jesús se identifica con la humanidad pecadora y comienza su misión de traer la salvación a nuestra naturaleza caída.

«Bautizar» significa sumergir o zambullir. El Papa Benedicto enseñó: «Jesús cargó sobre sus hombros el peso de la culpa de toda la humanidad; la llevó hasta las profundidades del Jordán. Inauguró su actividad pública poniéndose en el lugar de los pecadores. Este gesto inicial es una anticipación de la cruz».

Mientras Jesús se sumerge en el agua, el maligno siente un suspiro de alivio. Poco sabe que la redención está cerca; el bautismo nos conduce a la vida eterna.

El bautismo de Jesús nos recuerda también nuestra propia misión. Así como Jesús se identifica con nuestra naturaleza humana pecaminosa en el momento de su bautismo, nosotros nos identificamos con la naturaleza divina de Dios en el momento de nuestro propio bautismo (o al renovar nuestras promesas bautismales). De la misma manera que Jesús asume una misión y un ministerio para traer la salvación a la humanidad en el momento de su bautismo, nosotros participamos en la misión común de Jesús en el momento de nuestro propio bautismo (sacerdocio común).

¿Es el bautismo solo un ritual? ¿Cuáles son las gracias y bendiciones que recibimos en el momento de nuestro bautismo? ¿Qué me impulsa a comprender mi propio bautismo sobre mi identidad y vida cristiana? “El bautismo es el fundamento de toda la vida cristiana, la puerta de entrada a la vida en el Espíritu y la puerta que da acceso a los demás sacramentos” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, 1213).

Mensaje del pastor: Gracias a todos por sus esfuerzos: Estoy eternamente agradecido a todos ustedes por su generosidad. ¡Gracias por todas sus donaciones! La situación de la caldera del Salón de la Misericordia ha sido una gran preocupación este año, ya que la hemos estado reparando durante muchos años y llegamos a un punto en el que ya no era posible repararla más. ¡El contrato ya está firmado y, con su apoyo y oraciones, hemos comenzado este proyecto! Como parte de la campaña de recaudación de fondos de este año, el segundo y último proyecto es la reparación de las puertas de la iglesia. La semana pasada se firmó el contrato correspondiente y esperamos completar las reparaciones a principios de enero de 2026. ¡Gracias a sus oraciones y donaciones, esto ha sido posible para la parroquia! ¡Muchas gracias!

Conclusión del Año Jubilar
El Jubileo de la Esperanza concluyó el 6 de enero (Solemnidad de la Epifanía) con la celebración presidida por el Papa León. En su homilía, el Papa mencionó: «La Puerta Santa de esta Basílica, que hoy es la última en cerrarse, ha visto pasar una multitud innumerable de hombres y mujeres, peregrinos de la esperanza, que se dirigen hacia la nueva Jerusalén, la ciudad cuyas puertas están siempre abiertas (cf. Apocalipsis 21:25)». ¿Quiénes eran estos hombres y mujeres, y qué los motivaba? Al final de este Año Jubilar, la búsqueda espiritual de nuestros contemporáneos, mucho más profunda de lo que quizás podamos comprender, nos invita a una seria reflexión. Millones de ellos cruzaron el umbral de la Iglesia. ¿Qué encontraron? ¿Qué había en sus corazones, en sus preguntas, en sus sentimientos? Sí, los Reyes Magos todavía existen hoy. Son las personas que sienten la necesidad de salir a buscar, aceptando los riesgos que conlleva su viaje, especialmente en un mundo convulso como el nuestro, que puede ser desagradable y peligroso en muchos sentidos. Y al final de la homilía, el Papa también invitó a todos con estas palabras: “Queridos hermanos y hermanas, es maravilloso convertirnos en peregrinos de la esperanza. ¡Es maravilloso que sigamos siendo peregrinos juntos!”. La fidelidad de Dios sigue asombrándonos. Si no convertimos nuestras iglesias en monumentos, si nuestras comunidades son verdaderos hogares, si permanecemos unidos y resistimos la adulación y la seducción de quienes están en el poder, entonces seremos la generación de un nuevo amanecer.

Un agradecimiento especial a nuestro coro, al ministerio de decoración, a los lectores, a los ministros de la Eucaristía, a los sacristanes, a las encargadas de la ropa litúrgica, a los acólitos y a todo el clero: ¡Agradezco a todos los miembros de nuestro coro parroquial y al coro hispano por todas las horas dedicadas a la preparación y a la alabanza para glorificar a Dios y ayudar a la gente a orar! ¡Gracias por su servicio dedicado a Dios y a la comunidad! El comité de decoración ha realizado una labor excelente durante todo el año, cuidando las flores, las plantas, la decoración, la ropa litúrgica, etc. Gracias por todos sus esfuerzos para mantener la iglesia hermosa y brindar un ambiente agradable a todos. ¡Mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos nuestros voluntarios que mantienen viva la Iglesia con su dedicación! ¡Gracias a todos! Que la gracia de Dios nos llene a todos para renovar nuestro compromiso con Dios y con la Iglesia al comenzar el Año Nuevo.
