Dear Family!

The observance of National Marriage Week (February 7-14th ) and World Marriage Day (Sunday, February 8th) are so foundational to our faith and life as not only as Christians rather the foundation for any human society. This year’s theme is ‘Man and Woman He Created Them: Together with Purpose’. Our prayers are with all the married couples in our community:

“Almighty and eternal God! You blessed the union of married couples so that they might reflect the union of Christ with his Church: look with kindness on them. Renew their marriage covenant, increase your love in them, and strengthen their bond of peace so that, with their children, they may always rejoice in the gift of your blessing.”

The readings focus on the witnessing power disciples. Why do we proclaim the gospel? Why do we need be a witness of the gospel? The Catechism teaches us, “The fidelity of the baptized is a primordial condition for the proclamation of the Gospel and for the Church's mission in the world. In order that the message of salvation can show the power of its truth and radiance before men, it must be authenticated by the witness of the life of Christians. "The witness of a Christian life and good works done in a supernatural spirit have great power to draw men to the faith and to God.” (CCC 2044)

As our Covenantal Marriages are certainly a great witness of Jesus himself, the readings point us to other areas of witnessing and being disciples of Jesus. Salt and light are powerful images of the ancient world representing necessities of life in preserving and seasoning food, Jesus invites us to immerse ourselves in doing good. Through good deeds we could be most effective evangelizers of the Word. When we stop witnessing through our good deeds, we stop to evangelize; like the salt being useful, and like the lamp that gives light.

“The effects of Christ’s light must clearly be seen in the goodness of your lives! You must be examples of a faith that is rooted in a personal relationship to Jesus, lived in full communion with the Church. Your faith must be clearly seen in your obedience to the Gospel, in your lives of charity and service, and in your missionary zeal towards those who still do not believe or who no longer live the faith they received at Baptism. Take to heart Saint Paul’s lesson: be examples of patience and charity towards all people, mindful that if you have not love, then you are nothing at all (Cf. 1Cor. 13).” (Pope John Paul II’s Homily in 1993).

Cornelius Lapide writes: “Salt excites thirst. So, the Apostles have excited a thirst for heavenly things. Hear St. Hilary, ‘The Apostles are the preachers of heavenly things and, as it were, sowers of eternity: they bring immortality to all upon whom their speech is sprinkled.’”

Pastor’s Appeal - Thanks to all of you for your efforts: I am forever grateful to all of you for your generosity. Thank you for all your donations! Filipino Catholics Gathering Feb 21st: There will be a gathering of all Filipinos on Saturday, February 21st, after the 4:30pm Mass - a meet and greet session for parish involvement and ministry.

Rite of Election: Our Cathedral will have the Rite of Election on the 1st Sunday of Lent (February 22nd). We will be sending our OCIA Catechumens to this event and as a parish it is our duty to pray for them!

5º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Querida familia!

La celebración de la Semana Nacional del Matrimonio (del 7 al 14 de febrero) y del Día Mundial del Matrimonio (domingo 8 de febrero) es fundamental para nuestra fe y nuestra vida, no solo como cristianos, sino también como base de cualquier sociedad humana. El tema de este año es «Hombre y mujer los creó: Juntos con un propósito». Nuestras oraciones están con todas las parejas casadas de nuestra comunidad: «¡Dios todopoderoso y eterno! Tú bendijiste la unión de los esposos para que reflejaran la unión de Cristo con su Iglesia: míralos con bondad. Renueva su alianza matrimonial, aumenta tu amor en ellos y fortalece su vínculo de paz para que, junto con sus hijos, se regocijen siempre en el don de tu bendición».

Las lecturas se centran en el poder del testimonio de los discípulos. ¿Por qué proclamamos el Evangelio? ¿Por qué necesitamos ser testigos del Evangelio? El Catecismo nos enseña: «La fidelidad de los bautizados es una condición primordial para la proclamación del Evangelio y para la misión de la Iglesia en el mundo. Para que el mensaje de salvación pueda manifestar el poder de su verdad y su esplendor ante los hombres, debe ser autenticado por el testimonio de la vida de los cristianos. El testimonio de una vida cristiana y las buenas obras realizadas con espíritu sobrenatural tienen un gran poder para atraer a los hombres a la fe y a Dios» (CIC 2044).

Dado que nuestros matrimonios basados en la alianza son sin duda un gran testimonio de Jesús mismo, las lecturas nos señalan otras áreas para dar testimonio y ser discípulos de Jesús. La sal y la luz son imágenes poderosas del mundo antiguo que representan elementos esenciales para la vida, como la conservación y el sazonamiento de los alimentos. Jesús nos invita a comprometernos a hacer el bien. A través de las buenas obras, podemos ser evangelizadores de la Palabra de manera muy eficaz. Cuando dejamos de dar testimonio con nuestras buenas acciones, dejamos de evangelizar; al igual que la sal pierde su utilidad y la lámpara deja de dar luz.

“¡Los efectos de la luz de Cristo deben manifestarse claramente en la bondad de sus vidas! Deben ser ejemplos de una fe arraigada en una relación personal con Jesús, vivida en plena comunión con la Iglesia. Su fe debe ser evidente en su obediencia al Evangelio, en sus vidas de caridad y servicio, y en su celo misionero hacia quienes aún no creen o ya no viven la fe que recibieron en el Bautismo. Tomen en serio la enseñanza de San Pablo: sean ejemplos de paciencia y caridad con todas las personas, recordando que si no tienen amor, de nada les sirve (Cf. 1 Corintios 13).” (Homilía del Papa Juan Pablo II en 1993).

Cornelio Lapide escribe: “La sal provoca sed. Así, los Apóstoles han despertado la sed de las cosas celestiales. Escuchemos a San Hilario: ‘Los Apóstoles son los predicadores de las cosas celestiales y, por así decirlo, sembradores de la eternidad: traen la inmortalidad a todos aquellos sobre quienes se derrama su palabra’”.

Mensaje del pastor: Gracias a todos por sus esfuerzos: Les estoy eternamente agradecido por su generosidad. ¡Gracias por todas sus donaciones! Ambos proyectos (la calefacción del salón parroquial y las puertas de la iglesia) están casi terminados, ¡gracias a todos ustedes, a su apoyo y a sus oraciones! Han hecho posible esto para nuestra parroquia.

Encuentro de católicos filipinos el 21 de febrero: El sábado 21 de febrero, después de la misa de las 4:30 pm, se llevará a cabo un encuentro para todos los filipinos, con el fin de conocerse y participar en las actividades y ministerios de la parroquia.

Rito de Elección: Nuestra catedral celebrará el Rito de Elección el primer domingo de Cuaresma (22 de febrero). Enviaremos a nuestros catecúmenos del OCIA a este evento, ¡y como parroquia es nuestro deber orar por ellos!
