Dear Family!

At the beginning of the Lent, in the 1st Sunday we are given powerful readings that reveal to us the foundational aspects of sin and God’s continual grace in inviting us to holiness in freedom. In the first reading we read about the original sin. The woman took the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Taking this fruit of this tree is “equivalent to making a grab for moral autonomy. It is way of saying; I will decide what is right and what is wrong and I am not going to be told by anyone else. It is a form of idolatry.” (Geoffrey Plant).

Satan compromised our first parents’ trust in God and introduced doubt in them. (CCC 538). It presents us with a naked truth that we are so easily distracted in conceding to a lie than holding on to the limitless love of God. We came from God and we are created in God’s image and in a way we are already ‘like gods’, yet we deny God’s love and fail to respond to it by believing in a lie that come from father of lies.

Satan’s lie - ‘You certainly will not die!’. Death did enter the world through Adam’s sin. Can we restore us to God’s covenantal relationship after we wounded God’s heart? The Second Reading teaches us that only God can do that. Only God can remove the sin and heal the wound the sin caused.

We are always tempted by the devil and call the evils of our society the ‘new normal’. Ash Wednesday is the first day we witnessed God wiping the ‘I’ (our selfishness, greed, temptations, hatred and harmful desires) horizontally by tracing the Cross on our foreheads. Let us keep that image all through the season of Lent and beyond.

Pastor’s Appeal - Thanks to all of you for your efforts: I am forever grateful to all of you for your generosity. Thank you for all you donations! Both the projects (Mercy Hall boiler and the Church Doors) are now completed, thanks to all of you and your support and prayers! You have made this possible for your parish.

Though we have completed these two important projects, they are not paid for yet. We have scheduled a monthly plan with the companies to pay for them over a period of one year. Your continued support and prayers are still needed to complete them.

Filipino Catholics Gathering Feb 21st: There will be a gathering of all Filipinos on February 21st, Saturday after the 4:30pm Mass - a meet and greet session for parish involvement and ministry.

Rite of Election: Our Cathedral will have the Rite of Election on the 1st Sunday of Lent (February 22). We will be sending our OCIA Catechumens to this event and as a parish it is our duty to pray for them!

Bishop Checchio is now the Archbishop of New Orleans: Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans resigned as Archbishop of New Orleans on Feb 11th, meaning that Archbishop James Checchio is now the Archbishop of New Orleans. No further ceremony will take place. The succession is automatic. Let us keep Archbishop Checchio in our prayers!

1º Domingo de Cuaresma

¡Querida familia!

Al comienzo de la Cuaresma, en el primer domingo, recibimos lecturas impactantes que nos revelan los aspectos fundamentales del pecado y la gracia continua de Dios al invitarnos a la santidad en libertad. En la primera lectura leemos sobre el pecado original. La mujer tomó el fruto del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal. Tomar este fruto de este árbol equivale a intentar obtener autonomía moral. Es una forma de decir: «Decidiré lo que está bien y lo que está mal, y nadie más me lo dirá. Es una forma de idolatría» (Geoffrey Plant).

Satanás comprometió la confianza de nuestros primeros padres en Dios e introdujo la duda en ellos (CIC 538). Nos presenta la cruda realidad de que nos distraemos con tanta facilidad al ceder ante una mentira en lugar de aferrarnos al amor infinito de Dios. Venimos de Dios, fuimos creados a su imagen y, en cierto modo, ya somos como dioses; sin embargo, negamos el amor de Dios y no le respondemos creyendo en una mentira que proviene del padre de la mentira.

La mentira de Satanás: "¡Ciertamente no morirán!". La muerte entró en el mundo por el pecado de Adán. ¿Podemos restaurar la relación de alianza con Dios después de herir su corazón? La segunda lectura nos enseña que solo Dios puede hacerlo. Solo Dios puede eliminar el pecado y sanar la herida que causó.

Siempre nos tienta el diablo y llamamos a los males de nuestra sociedad la "nueva normalidad". El Miércoles de Ceniza fue el primer día en que presenciamos cómo Dios limpió el "yo" (nuestro egoísmo, avaricia, tentaciones, odio y malos deseos) horizontalmente al trazar la cruz en nuestras frentes. Conservemos esa imagen durante toda la Cuaresma y más allá.

Llamado del Pastor - Gracias a todos por su esfuerzo: Les estaré eternamente agradecido por su generosidad. ¡Gracias por todas sus donaciones! Ambos proyectos (la calefacción en Mercy Hall y las puertas de la iglesia) ya están terminados. Gracias a todos ustedes, a su apoyo y a sus oraciones. Ustedes han hecho esto posible para su parroquia.

Aunque hemos completado estos dos importantes proyectos, aún no están pagados. Hemos acordado un plan mensual con las empresas para financiarlos durante un año. Necesitamos su continuo apoyo y oraciones para completarlos.

Encuentro de católicos filipinos el 21 de febrero: El sábado 21 de febrero, después de la misa de las 4:30 pm, se llevará a cabo un encuentro para todos los filipinos, con el fin de conocerse y participar en las actividades y ministerios de la parroquia.

Rito de Elección: Nuestra catedral celebrará el Rito de Elección el primer domingo de Cuaresma (22 de febrero). Enviaremos a nuestros catecúmenos del OCIA a este evento, ¡y como parroquia es nuestro deber orar por ellos!

El Obispo Checchio es ahora Arzobispo de Nueva Orleans: El Arzobispo Gregory Aymond de Nueva Orleans renunció como Arzobispo de Nueva Orleans el 11 de febrero, lo que significa que el Arzobispo James Checchio es ahora Arzobispo de Nueva Orleans. No se realizará ninguna otra ceremonia. La sucesión es automática. ¡Mantengamos al Arzobispo Checchio presente en nuestras oraciones!
