Dear Family!

The Catechism teaches us that “Jesus, Israel's Messiah and therefore the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, was to fulfill the Law by keeping it in its all- embracing detail - according to his own words, down to "the least of these commandments". He is in fact the only one who could keep it perfectly. On their own admission the Jews were never able to observe the Law in its entirety without violating the least of its precepts.

This is why every year on the Day of Atonement the children of Israel ask God's forgiveness for their transgressions of the Law. The Law indeed makes up one inseparable whole, and St. James recalls, "Whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.” (CCC 578)

The readings for this Sunday challenge us to choose freely and wisely to observe the laws given by a loving and caring God. God revealed His Laws to his Chosen People through Moses and the Prophets in the Old Testament and through Jesus, His Son in the New Testament. The First Reading is a great reminder that we are free people, and we choose God freely with our human free will. The Second Reading teaching us through Paul that we believers appreciate the wisdom of God’ saving plan for His People, a plan hidden for ages but now revealed by the Spirit.

Jesus challenges us through this continued teaching of the Sermon on the Mount that our life of justice and righteousness should exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. While Jesus explains the real meaning of three Mosaic Laws concerning murder, adultery and false oaths Jesus strongly sets forth his own position with regard to the Law given through Moses.

The readings focus on love also. When kings conquer lands, they bring people under their control. Unlike kings God has nothing to gain from us, even if we obey the law or not.

It is for our advantage, Jesus brought us back to God, Jesus brought us back the happiness that we lost by our disobedience. Mathew introduces Jesus’ public ministry with the revolutionary outpouring of the beatitudes. Jesus indeed fulfilled the old law by becoming the new Moses with the clean message - following the law must lead us to holiness.

God wants us not just to be ‘good’, rather God wants us to be holy. Does my Christian living, lead me to holiness? Does my following the church teachings, laws and practices make me a better person for my community? Observing God’s precepts without love does not make sense and does not lead us to salvation. Jesus says, ‘if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the Pharisees. You will never get into the kingdom of heaven Mt 5:20. We live and proclaim the gospel through the way me love God and other.

Filipino Catholics Gathering Feb 21st: There will be a gathering of all Filipinos on February 21st, Saturday after the 4:30pm Mass - a meet and greet session for parish involvement and ministry.

Rite of Election: Our Cathedral will have the Rite of Election on the 1st Sunday of Lent (February 22nd). We will be sending our OCIA Catechumens to this event and as a parish it is our duty to pray for them!

¡Querida familia!

El Catecismo nos enseña que "Jesús, el Mesías de Israel y, por tanto, el más grande en el reino de los cielos, debía cumplir la Ley guardándola en todos sus detalles, según sus propias palabras, hasta "el más pequeño de estos mandamientos". De hecho, Él es el único que podía cumplirla perfectamente. Según ellos mismos admiten, los judíos nunca pudieron observar la Ley en su totalidad sin violar el más pequeño de sus preceptos. Por eso, cada año, en el Día de la Expiación, los hijos de Israel Piden perdón a Dios por sus transgresiones de la Ley. De hecho, la Ley constituye un todo inseparable, y Santiago recuerda: "Quien guarda toda la Ley pero falla en un punto se ha hecho culpable de toda ella". (CCC 578)

Las lecturas de este domingo nos desafían a elegir libre y sabiamente observar las leyes dadas por un Dios amoroso y bondadoso. Dios reveló Sus Leyes a su Pueblo Elegido a través de Moisés y los Profetas en el Antiguo Testamento y a través de Jesús, Su Hijo en el Nuevo Testamento. La Primera Lectura es un gran recordatorio de que somos personas libres y elegimos a Dios libremente con nuestro libre albedrío humano. La Segunda Lectura nos enseña a través de Pablo que los creyentes apreciamos la sabiduría del plan salvador de Dios para Su Pueblo, un plan escondido por siglos pero ahora revelado por el Espíritu.

Jesús nos desafía a través de esta enseñanza continua del Sermón del Monte de que nuestra vida de justicia y rectitud debe exceder la de los escribas y fariseos. Mientras Jesús explica el verdadero significado de las tres Leyes Mosaicas relativas al asesinato, el adulterio y los falsos juramentos, Jesús expone con firmeza su propia posición con respecto a la Ley dada a través de Moisés.

Las lecturas también se centran en el amor. Cuando los reyes conquistan tierras, ponen a la gente bajo su control. A diferencia de los reyes, Dios no tiene nada que ganar con nosotros, incluso si obedecemos la ley o no. Es para nuestro beneficio, Jesús nos devolvió a Dios, Jesús nos devolvió la felicidad que perdimos por nuestra desobediencia.

Mateo presenta el ministerio público de Jesús con el derramamiento revolucionario de las bienaventuranzas. De hecho, Jesús cumplió la antigua ley al convertirse en el nuevo Moisés con el mensaje limpio: seguir la ley debe llevarnos a la santidad.

Dios quiere que no sólo seamos “buenos”, sino que más bien quiere que seamos santos. ¿Mi vida cristiana me lleva a la santidad? ¿Seguir las enseñanzas, leyes y prácticas de la iglesia me convierte en una mejor persona para mi comunidad? Observar los preceptos de Dios sin amor no tiene sentido y no nos lleva a la salvación. Jesús dice: "si vuestra virtud no es más profunda que la de los fariseos". Nunca entrarás en el reino de los cielos Mt 5:20. Vivimos y proclamamos el evangelio a través de la forma en que amo a Dios y a los demás.

Ambos proyectos (la calefacción en Mercy Hall y las puertas de la iglesia) están casi terminados, ¡gracias a todos ustedes, a su apoyo y a sus oraciones! Encuentro de católicos filipinos el 21 de febrero: El sábado 21 de febrero, después de la misa de las 4:30 pm, se llevará a cabo un encuentro para todos los filipinos, con el fin de conocerse y participar en las actividades y ministerios de la parroquia.

Rito de Elección: Nuestra catedral celebrará el Rito de Elección el primer domingo de Cuaresma (22 de febrero). Enviaremos a nuestros catecúmenos del OCIA a este evento, ¡y como parroquia es nuestro deber orar por ellos!
