Dear Family!

What a weekend! Last weekend was a tough one as I witnessed 8 people for the 9am Mass and just 1 person for the 11am Mass. We continued to celebrate all the masses and prayed for all of you! As we slowly getting back to our routines, a joyous feast is given to us. On Monday, the Universal Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. (2nd of February). As we see, this event is recorded only in the Gospel of Luke. Luke presents the Holy Family as an observant family, always did things in accordance with the Law.

Traditionally we celebrate the circumcision of Jesus on the 1st of January as the 8th day is the norm. Closely associated with the circumcision ceremony through which a Jewish boy officially and legally becomes part of the people of Israel, the Israelites also celebrate two other rituals: Redemption of the firstborn and purification of the mother after childbirth. The Feast of the Presentation is the combination of these two rituals.

Exodus 13:2, 12-13 prescribes that every first-born male belongs to God. Parents had to ‘buy back’ the child by offering a lamb or turtledove as a sacrifice in the temple. As the prophecies of Malachi in the first reading complements and fulfills in the prophecy of Simeon in the Gospel, the observation of Father Ronald Rolheiser is indeed a worthy reflection here:

“The children we have are not really ours. They are given to us, in trust, for a time, a short time really, and we are asked to be mothers and fathers, mentors, guardians, protectors, teachers and friends to them, but they are never really our children. If we understand this we will be less inclined to act as ‘owners’, to manipulate our children for our own needs, to see them as satellites within our own orbits.”

Mercy Hall boiler - The contract has been signed now and with your support and prayers we have begun this project! The work has begun and hopefully we complete it as planned. The same applies for the Church Doors. A Contract has been signed also. You have made this possible for the parish with your prayers and donations! Thank you! We will be updating you regularly on these projects.

Exploring Faith: Thanks to the Legion of Mary for hosting this event. We all need to constantly update our learning especially learning about our faith. There are ways to build community, and this is one of them - to come together and share what we believe and learn from each other. Though in the initial stage, this group can develop into a formidable strength to our parish when we formalize the topics discussed and follow them up with action. Please come and be part of it!

Filipino Catholics Gathering Feb 21st: There will be a gathering of all Filipinos on Saturday, February 21st, after the 4:30pm Mass - a meet and greet session for parish involvement and ministry.

Rite of Election: Our Cathedral will have the Rite of Election on the 1st Sunday of Lent (February 22nd). We will be sending our OCIA Catechumens to this event and as a parish it is our duty to pray for them!

There are also a few minor projects in all our buildings: school classroom work, Mercy Hall painting work, getting heat in the Sacristy of the Church and some basic repair work in the rectory. I thank all our volunteers especially those who are involved in these projects. Please pray for all these projects!

¡Querida familia!

¡Qué fin de semana! El fin de semana pasado fue difícil, ya que solo asistieron 8 personas a la misa de las 9 de la mañana y una sola persona a la de las 11. Continuamos celebrando todas las misas y oramos por todos ustedes. Mientras poco a poco volvemos a nuestras rutinas, se nos presenta una fiesta gozosa. El lunes, la Iglesia Universal celebra la Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor (2 de febrero). Como vemos, este acontecimiento está registrado únicamente en el Evangelio de Lucas. Lucas presenta a la Sagrada Familia como una familia observante, que siempre actuaba de acuerdo con la Ley.

Tradicionalmente, celebramos la circuncisión de Jesús el 1 de enero, ya que el octavo día es la fecha habitual. Estrechamente relacionados con la ceremonia de la circuncisión, mediante la cual un niño judío se integra oficial y legalmente al pueblo de Israel, los israelitas también celebran otros dos rituales: la redención del primogénito y la purificación de la madre después del parto. La Fiesta de la Presentación es la combinación de estos dos rituales.

Éxodo 13:2, 12-13 prescribe que todo primogénito varón pertenece a Dios. Los padres debían «rescatar» al niño ofreciendo un cordero o una tórtola como sacrificio en el templo. Dado que las profecías de Malaquías en la primera lectura complementan y se cumplen en la profecía de Simeón en el Evangelio, la observación del Padre Ronald Rolheiser es, sin duda, una reflexión digna de consideración en este contexto:

“Los hijos que tenemos no son realmente nuestros. Nos son confiados, en custodia, por un tiempo, un tiempo muy breve en realidad, y se nos pide que seamos madres y padres, mentores, guardianes, protectores, maestros y amigos para ellos, pero en realidad nunca son nuestros hijos. Si comprendemos esto, estaremos menos inclinados a actuar como ‘dueños’, a manipular a nuestros hijos para satisfacer nuestras propias necesidades, a verlos como satélites dentro de nuestras propias órbitas.”

Mensaje del párroco: Gracias a todos por sus esfuerzos: Les estoy eternamente agradecido por su generosidad. ¡Gracias por todas sus donaciones! Caldera del Salón de la Misericordia: ¡Ya se ha firmado el contrato y, gracias a su apoyo y oraciones, hemos comenzado este proyecto! Los trabajos ya han comenzado y esperamos completarlos según lo previsto. Lo mismo ocurre con las puertas de la iglesia. También se ha firmado un contrato. ¡Ustedes han hecho esto posible para la parroquia con sus oraciones y donaciones! ¡Gracias! Les mantendremos informados periódicamente sobre estos proyectos.

Explorando la fe: Gracias a la Legión de María por organizar este evento. Todos necesitamos actualizar constantemente nuestros conocimientos, especialmente en lo que respecta a nuestra fe. Hay maneras de construir comunidad, y esta es una de ellas: reunirnos, compartir nuestras creencias y aprender unos de otros. Aunque se encuentra en su etapa inicial, este grupo puede convertirse en una fuerza formidable para nuestra parroquia si formalizamos los temas tratados y los llevamos a la práctica. ¡Los invitamos a participar!

Encuentro de católicos filipinos el 21 de febrero: El sábado 21 de febrero, después de la misa de las 4:30 pm, se llevará a cabo un encuentro para todos los filipinos, con el fin de conocerse y participar en las actividades y ministerios de la parroquia.

Rito de Elección: Nuestra catedral celebrará el Rito de Elección el primer domingo de Cuaresma (22 de febrero). Enviaremos a nuestros catecúmenos del OCIA a este evento, ¡y como parroquia es nuestro deber orar por ellos!

También tenemos algunos proyectos menores en todos nuestros edificios: trabajos en las aulas de la escuela, pintura en el Salón de la Misericordia, instalación de calefacción en la sacristía de la iglesia y algunas reparaciones básicas en la casa parroquial. Agradezco a todos nuestros voluntarios, especialmente a quienes participan en estos proyectos. ¡Por favor, oren por todas estas obras!
