Dear Family!

The Greatest command as taught by Jesus is found in Mark 12:28-34. Loving God and loving our neighbor are seen as one command and the greatest command that Jesus taught us. ‘Our Father’ is referred to as ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ expressing to us the same sentiments of the Greatest command of the Lord of loving God and loving neighbor. Every time we pray the Lord’s prayer we initiate our love for God and neighbor in a profound way. In a way we can say that prayer initiates love of God and neighbor.

The prayer of Abraham in the first reading expresses the same sentiments as Abraham is seen as a prophet or a mouthpiece of God and neighbor. Abraham speaks for God as God is merciful and just. Abraham also speaks for us to be holy and childlike. Abraham’s ‘bargaining’ can be seen as a powerful prayer focused on the good of humanity.

In the same way the Lord’s prayer is centered around the good of humanity. Our happiness, our freedom, our contentment and our goodness are all ‘filled to the brim’ in the Lord’s prayer. It is a treasure of all treasures. The more we pray the ‘Our Father’, the more we feel blessed, the more we feel God’s love compelling us to broaden our hearts to everyone.

The Catechism teaches us that ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ is truly the summary of the whole gospel. (CCC 2761) as Tertullian points out, “Since the Lord… after handling over the practice of prayer, said elsewhere, ‘Ask and you will receive’, and since everyone has petitions which are peculiar to his circumstances, the regular and appropriate prayer (Our Father) is said first, as the foundation of further desires.”

Diocesan Jubilee Pilgrimage to the National Shrine in Washington, DC, (Sept. 20th). The Bishop will celebrate a special Mass at the Blue Army Shrine on September 13th (maybe those who cannot go to DC might want a more local pilgrimage).

New Jersey March for Life is on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

150th Anniversary of Catholic Education in Phillipsburg (Sun, Dec 7th at 11am)
As the anniversary approaches near, there are preliminary preparations that need to happen. Please save the date: Sunday, December 7th, the Bishop will celebrate a special mass at 11am to mark the event. All are welcome!

New Coordinators for Liturgical Ministries: As of July 1, 2025, the Eucharistic Ministers will be coordinated by Beth Ann Dispoto. Lectors and Ushers will be coordinated by Rob Anselmo, our deacon candidate. Please talk to any clergy or ministry coordinators if you like to serve as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, or Usher.

Diocesan Programs in the near future: A Bible study program from September 4th to December 18th, the topic is Prophets. The second part is planned from Jan 15th to Mar 19th on the same topic. Surviving Divorce (an 8 week program organized by the Diocese): This program is for those seeking healing from separation or divorce. It starts on October 1st and ends on November 19th. The sessions will only be on Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Pastoral Center. The 2nd Annual mass for Italian Apostolate will be held at the Newark Cathedral on Oct 4th at 5pm. Jay Donofrio, our Diocesan Youth Director is announcing the launch of a new podcast ‘No half Saints’. Please check it out in YouTube.

17º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Querida familia!

El mandamiento más importante, tal como lo enseñó Jesús, se encuentra en Marcos 12:28-34. Amar a Dios y amar al prójimo se consideran un solo mandamiento, el más importante que Jesús nos enseñó. El Padrenuestro se conoce como el Padrenuestro, y expresa los mismos sentimientos del mandamiento más importante del Señor: amar a Dios y al prójimo. Cada vez que rezamos el Padrenuestro, iniciamos nuestro amor por Dios y el prójimo de manera profunda. En cierto modo, podemos decir que la oración inicia el amor a Dios y al prójimo.

La oración de Abraham en la primera lectura expresa los mismos sentimientos, pues Abraham es visto como profeta o portavoz de Dios y del prójimo. Abraham habla en nombre de Dios, pues Dios es misericordioso y justo. Abraham también nos exhorta a ser santos y semejantes a los hijos. Su «negociación» puede verse como una poderosa oración centrada en el bien de la humanidad.

Del mismo modo, el Padrenuestro se centra en el bien de la humanidad. Nuestra felicidad, nuestra libertad, nuestra satisfacción y nuestra bondad se colman en el Padrenuestro. Es un tesoro de tesoros. Cuanto más rezamos el Padrenuestro, más bendecidos nos sentimos, más sentimos el amor de Dios que nos impulsa a abrir nuestro corazón a todos.

El Catecismo nos enseña que el Padrenuestro es verdaderamente el resumen de todo el Evangelio (CIC 2761). Como señala Tertuliano: «Puesto que el Señor… después de haber tratado la práctica de la oración, dijo en otro lugar: “Pedid y recibiréis”, y puesto que cada uno tiene peticiones propias de su situación, se reza primero la oración regular y apropiada (el Padrenuestro), como fundamento de los deseos ulteriores».

Peregrinación Diocesana del Jubileo al Santuario Nacional en Washington, D.C. (20 de septiembre). El obispo celebrará una misa especial en el Santuario del Ejército Azul el 13 de septiembre (quizás quienes no puedan ir a D.C. deseen una peregrinación más local).

La Marcha por la Vida de Nueva Jersey será el jueves 25 de septiembre de 2025.

Programas Diocesanos Próximamente: El programa de estudio bíblico se llevará a cabo del 4 de septiembre al 18 de diciembre, con el tema "Profetas". La segunda parte está prevista del 15 de enero al 19 de marzo, sobre el mismo tema. Sobreviviendo al Divorcio (programa de 8 semanas organizado por la Diócesis): Este programa está dirigido aquellos que buscan sanar tras una separación o divorcio. Comienza el 1 de octubre y termina el 19 de noviembre. Las sesiones serán solo los miércoles de 6:30pm a 8pm en el Centro Pastoral. La 2.ª misa anual del Apostolado Italiano se celebrará en la Catedral de Newark el 4 de octubre a las 5:00 pm.
