Dear Family!

The readings focus on ‘justice’. Our human understanding of ‘justice’ results from logic - you worked for a month, and you get your pay; you did this and you get that. To be fair there is a balance between an act and a result (reward or punishment). ‘Justice’ in God’s language is rooted in love. God’s love is present while we are still sinners (St. Paul). To be just, to be fair in God’s language is to be in love. The First Reading reminds us that God’s almighty power includes his strength to be merciful.

The story of Zacchaeus is actually the story of God’s essence; the story of who God is. Once we learn as to who God is, this same story becomes our story. It becomes our story in three different ways: A) I feel God’s call to a holy way of life. I think of one thing that I could work on in my personal life to become a better person this week, this month, this year. B) I feel I need to love like Jesus despite the sins of others (my family, my friends etc.) because God loves me that way. C) I feel God wants me to be generous with my love towards others.

The encounter between Jesus and Zacchaeus embodies divine mercy in action. Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector and sinner, climbs a sycamore tree to see Jesus. To his astonishment, Jesus calls him by name and declares, “Today I must stay at your house.” In this single act of self-giving love, Jesus transforms Zacchaeus’ life; repentance and restitution follow naturally from grace received. Jesus’ mission statement concludes the episode: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Divine mercy here is both personal and transformative—it restores human dignity and reconciles the sinner to the community. The “house” into which Jesus enters symbolizes the soul renewed by grace.

Catechism 545 sheds more light on Jesus’ love for the sinners: “Jesus invites sinners to the table of the kingdom: "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." He invites them to that conversion without which one cannot enter the kingdom but shows them in word and deed his Father's boundless mercy for them and the vast "joy in heaven over one sinner who repents”. The supreme proof of his love will be the sacrifice of his own life "for the forgiveness of sins".

The Pope has appointed Bishop James Checchio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans: The Church of Metuchen had a farewell Mass for Bishop Checchio on November 1st at the Cathedral. Please keep our Bishop in your prayers! We will continue to mention Bishop Checchio’s name until the afternoon of Tuesday, November 18th. (That is when Bishop Checchio will be named the Coadjutor Bishop). Our diocese will become vacant, and we will not mention Bishop’s name until we get a new Bishop.

Funeral Ministry: The Legion of Mary will be involved in the Funeral Ministry. I thank them for their generous contribution in being involved in this important ministry. More details will follow.

Sound System in the Church: The Sound System has been a big challenge for us over the years. Because of the nature of Gothic structure, the church needs a system that caters to its needs, which is unfortunately expensive. What we have opted for is a cheaper version of it. We are looking into different ways of bettering the quality of the sound, thanks to Deacon Enock and some volunteers.

¡Querida familia!

Las lecturas se centran en la justicia. Nuestra comprensión humana de la justicia se basa en la lógica: trabajaste un mes y recibiste tu salario; hiciste esto y recibiste algo. Para ser justos, debe haber un equilibrio entre la acción y el resultado (recompensa o castigo). La justicia, en el lenguaje de Dios, tiene su raíz en el amor. El amor de Dios está presente aun cuando somos pecadores (San Pablo). Ser justo, ser equitativo, en el lenguaje de Dios, es amar. La primera lectura nos recuerda que el poder omnipotente de Dios incluye su fuerza para ser misericordioso.

La historia de Zaqueo es, en realidad, la historia de la esencia de Dios; la historia de quién es Dios. Una vez que comprendemos quién es Dios, esta misma historia se convierte en nuestra historia. Se convierte en nuestra historia de tres maneras diferentes:

A) Siento el llamado de Dios a una vida santa. Pienso en algo que podría mejorar en mi vida personal para ser mejor persona esta semana, este mes, este año.

B) Siento que debo amar como Jesús a pesar de los pecados de los demás (mi familia, mis amigos, etc.) porque Dios me ama así.

C) Siento que Dios quiere que sea generoso con mi amor hacia los demás.

El encuentro entre Jesús y Zaqueo encarna la misericordia divina en acción. Zaqueo, un rico recaudador de impuestos y pecador sube a un sicómoro para ver a Jesús. Para su asombro, Jesús lo llama por su nombre y le dice: «Hoy debo hospedarme en tu casa». En este sencillo acto de amor abnegado, Jesús transforma la vida de Zaqueo; el arrepentimiento y la restitución surgen naturalmente de la gracia recibida. La declaración de misión de Jesús concluye el episodio: «El Hijo del Hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido». La misericordia divina aquí es a la vez personal y transformadora: restaura la dignidad humana y reconcilia al pecador con la comunidad. La «casa» en la que entra Jesús simboliza el alma renovada por la gracia.

El Catecismo 545 arroja más luz sobre el amor de Jesús por los pecadores: «Jesús invita a los pecadores a la mesa del reino: “No he venido a llamar a justos, sino a pecadores”. Los invita a esa conversión sin la cual no se puede entrar en el reino, pero les muestra con palabras y obras la infinita misericordia de su Padre y la inmensa “alegría en el cielo por un pecador que se arrepiente”. La prueba suprema de su amor será el sacrificio de su propia vida “para el perdón de los pecados”».

El Papa ha nombrado al obispo James Checchio arzobispo coadjutor de Nueva Orleans: La Iglesia de Metuchen celebró una misa de despedida para el Obispo Checchio el 1 de noviembre en la Catedral. ¡Oremos por nuestro Obispo! Seguiremos mencionando el nombre del Obispo Checchio hasta la tarde del martes 18 de noviembre (fecha en que será nombrado Obispo Coadjutor). Nuestra diócesis queda vacante y no mencionaremos el nombre del Obispo hasta que tengamos uno nuevo.

Ministerio Funerario: La Legión de María participará en el Ministerio Funerario. Les agradezco su generosa contribución al participar en este importante ministerio. Próximamente les daré más detalles.

Sistema de sonido en la iglesia: El sistema de sonido ha sido un gran desafío para nosotros durante años. Debido a la naturaleza de la estructura gótica, la iglesia necesita un sistema que se adapte a sus necesidades, lo cual, lamentablemente resulta costoso. Por ello, hemos optado por una versión más económica. Gracias al diácono Enock y algunos voluntarios, estamos buscando diferentes maneras de mejorar la calidad del sonido.
