Dear Family!

Reflection:
There will always be uncertainties in life as you probably felt it at times in your lives. The personalities we meet in the readings are all and nothing but personalities who faced uncertainties all their lives. Elijah’s uncertainty is all about his prophetic role. In the Gospel, the Apostles unwillingly agree to get into the boat as they were enjoying the privilege of Jesus’s friendship - they got special recognition from the people. For Jesus, a ‘special recognition’ is given to you when you are found worthy at the time of challenge, trial, and tribulation.

Our Christian vocation certainly seem to put us through this path of uncertainty. If things are easy for you such as your prayer life, your sacrifices, your practice of religion, your moral life, your care for the poor and needy, your witness to the Gospel, your call as a peace-maker, your thirst for justice and truth, your humility - if all these come easy for you, you are not doing them right! Nothing of a Christian Vocation is easy or certain.

Our vocation, our history and our church are symbols of uncertainty, but at the same time they promise a certainty of a different kind. Elijah’s uncertainty is comforted by God’s gentle breeze. The Apostles’ uncertainty is comforted by Jesus’s presence and nearness. Paul’s uncertainty is comforted by ‘It is not I, but Christ who lives in me’. What is uncertain is temporary. What is certain in permanent. What is certain? What is permanent? God’s unconditional love and care; God’s mercy and compassion; God’s salvation, grace and blessing are certain and permanent.

St. John of the Cross warns us that “any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty” (CCC:65). Knowing all these guides, how do I answer Christ’s command: “Come?”

Pride in Our Priests Banquet: Our Knights of Columbus Metuchen Chapter is continuing its tradition of generosity towards our priests. As they have in the past, the Knights are inviting all the priests of our diocese to join them at their "Pride in Our Priests" Banquet on Tuesday, September 15th, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at The Grand Marquis, 1550 Route 9 South, Old Bridge, NJ 08857.

The Stanley Rother Story: The National theatrical release of the documentary ‘American Martyr’ - The Stanley Rother Story, being released on August 25th and in Spanish on August 27th .

Missionary Priest will be visiting us: On the weekend of August 22-23, we are blessed to welcome Fr. Michael Tiggga from the Diocese of Dinajpur, Bangladesh, who will preach at all Masses on behalf of Bishop Sebastian Tudu, D.D., as part of the annual Missionary Cooperation Plan.

NJ Bishops’ Mass for Life & NJ March for Life
On Thursday, October 8th, 9:30am at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, there will be a special NJ Bishops’ Mass for Life, the NJ Rally, and the March for Life will begin at 11am at the Statehouse Annex, a short walk from the Cathedral. There will be buses organized for this trip. Please call the office for more information.

Monsignor Sheehan Scholarship Committee: This year the families continued to get scholarships from the diocese to go to Catholic Schools throughout the diocese. In addition to that we also had little money saved in the Monsignor Sheehan’s Scholarship Fund. We created a committee to work with various families that applied to us for help. I thank the committee in guiding me to award this much needed help to our school families.

Diocesan Programs in the near future: The 2026 Children's Choir Summer Camp (Aug. 10-14, & 16), PCL Formation Days (Sept. 1 & Oct. 8), the Hispanic Heritage Mass (Sept. 18), OCIA Formation Days (Sept. 26, Nov. 14, & Jan. 23) and the Silver & Gold Anniversary Celebration (Oct. 18). Also included is information regarding the Upcoming Adult Faith Formation Classes and National Black Catholic History Month (Nov.).

¡Querida familia!

Reflexión:
Siempre habrá incertidumbres en la vida, tal como probablemente ustedes mismos han sentido en algún momento. Las figuras que encontramos en las lecturas no son más que personas que afrontaron incertidumbres a lo largo de toda su vida. La incertidumbre de Elías está ligada a su papel profético. En el Evangelio, los Apóstoles aceptan a regañadientes subir a la barca, pues disfrutaban del privilegio de la amistad de Jesús y recibían un reconocimiento especial por parte de la gente. Para Jesús, el «reconocimiento especial» se otorga cuando uno demuestra ser digno en los momentos de desafío, prueba y tribulación.

Ciertamente, nuestra vocación cristiana parece llevarnos por este camino de incertidumbre. Si todo te resulta fácil —tu vida de oración, tus sacrificios, tu práctica religiosa, tu vida moral, tu atención a los pobres y necesitados, tu testimonio del Evangelio, tu llamado a ser artífice de paz, tu sed de justicia y verdad, tu humildad; si todo esto te resulta fácil, ¡es que no lo estás haciendo bien! Nada en la vocación cristiana es fácil ni seguro.

Nuestra vocación, nuestra historia y nuestra Iglesia son símbolos de incertidumbre, pero al mismo tiempo prometen una certeza de índole distinta. La incertidumbre de Elías se ve reconfortada por la suave brisa de Dios. La incertidumbre de los Apóstoles encuentra consuelo en la presencia y la cercanía de Jesús.

La incertidumbre de Pablo halla alivio en la afirmación: «No soy yo quien vive, sino que es Cristo quien vive en mí». Lo incierto es pasajero; lo cierto es permanente. ¿Qué es lo cierto? ¿Qué es lo permanente? El amor y el cuidado incondicionales de Dios, su misericordia y compasión, así como su salvación, su gracia y su bendición, son realidades ciertas y permanentes.

San Juan de la Cruz nos advierte que «cualquier persona que cuestione a Dios o desee alguna visión o revelación sería culpable no solo de una conducta insensata, sino también de ofenderle, al no fijar la mirada totalmente en Cristo y al vivir con el deseo de alguna otra novedad» (CIC: 65). Conociendo todas estas orientaciones, ¿cómo respondo al mandato de Cristo: «Ven»?

Banquete «Orgullo por nuestros sacerdotes»: El Capítulo de Metuchen de los Caballeros de Colón continúa con su tradición de generosidad hacia nuestros sacerdotes. Al igual que en ocasiones anteriores, los Caballeros invitan a todos los sacerdotes de nuestra diócesis a acompañarlos en el banquete «Orgullo por nuestros sacerdotes», que se celebrará el martes 15 de septiembre, de 6:00 pm a 10:00 pm, en The Grand Marquis (1550 Route 9 South, Old Bridge, NJ 08857).

La historia de Stanley Rother: Estreno nacional en cines del documental “American Martyr: The Stanley Rother Story”, que se estrenará el 25 de agosto (y en español, el 27 de agosto).

Nos visitará un sacerdote misionero: El fin de semana del 22 y 23 de agosto, tendremos la bendición de recibir al P. Michael Tiggga, de la Diócesis de Dinajpur (Bangladesh), quien predicará en todas las misas en representación del Obispo Sebastian Tudu, D.D., como parte del Plan Anual de Cooperación Misionera.

Misa por la Vida de los Obispos de NJ y Marcha por la Vida de NJ
El jueves 8 de octubre, a las 9:30 am, se celebrará una Misa especial por la Vida oficiada por los obispos de Nueva Jersey en la Catedral de Santa María de la Asunción; posteriormente, a las 11:00am, comenzarán el mitin y la Marcha por la Vida de Nueva Jersey en el anexo del Capitolio estatal (Statehouse Annex), situado a poca distancia a pie de la Catedral. Se organizarán autobuses para este evento; por favor, comuníquese con la oficina para obtener más información.

Comité de Becas Monseñor Sheehan: Este año, algunas familias recibieron becas de la diócesis para asistir a escuelas católicas de toda la diócesis. Además, contábamos con algunos fondos ahorrados en el Fondo de Becas Monseñor Sheehan. Creamos un comité para trabajar con las diversas familias que solicitaron nuestra ayuda. Agradezco al comité por orientarme a la hora de otorgar esta ayuda, tan necesaria, a las familias de nuestras escuelas.

Programas Diocesanos en el futuro cercano: El campamento de verano del coro infantil de 2026 (10-14 y 16 de agosto), las jornadas de formación para coordinadores de catequesis parroquial (PCL) (1 de septiembre y 8 de octubre), la Misa de la Herencia Hispana (18 de septiembre), las jornadas de formación del OCIA (26 de septiembre, 14 de noviembre y 23 de enero) y la celebración de aniversarios de bodas de plata y oro (18 de octubre). También se incluye información sobre las próximas clases de formación en la fe para adultos y el Mes Nacional de la Historia de los Católicos Negros (noviembre).
