Dear Family!

Every year we observe Religious Freedom Week. This year we observe it from June 22nd to 29th. It begins with the feast day of Saint Thomas More and Saint John Fisher (Both on the 22nd of June) and we also celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist on the 24th of June (the only other birthdays we celebrate in the Catholic Church are the birth of our Lord and our Blessed Mother) and end with the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. If we look at all these personalities it is obvious why we are observing Religious Freedom Week.

This year we focus on “Embracing the Divine Gift of Freedom” as the theme. Every day of this week has its own focus and prayer. On the 22nd of June, we reflect and pray on the Respect for Sacred Spaces; the 23rd on the Seal of Confession; the 24th for the needs of Nicaragua; the 25th for Religious Student Groups; the 26th for Religious Freedom in Nigeria; the 27th for Faith at Work and on the 28th our prayers and focus will be on Service to Immigrants and Refugees. Last but not the least, on the 29th of June we reflect and pray for Catholic Healthcare.

As I wrote to you last week regarding the good news of identifying the new principal, I request you to read my letter of invitation to welcome her and also thank Mrs. Kucinski for her leadership on Sunday the 16th of July. There will be a special thanksgiving mass at 11am for both of them and a reception at Mercy Hall after the mass.

We have been blessed with many celebrations especially of our clergy: Deacon Francisco’s first year anniversary as a deacon was on May 14th; Deacon Rob celebrated his 6th diaconate anniversary on May 18th; Deacon Larry celebrated his 11th anniversary on June 9th and of course we had a grand celebration of the 25th anniversary of Deacon Enock’s diaconate ordination on June 13th. On the 28th of June I will be celebrating my 20th anniversary of Priestly Ordination. We will have a thanksgiving mass at 11am and reception after mass on Sunday, July 2nd. As Father John advised all of you to pray a ‘Hail Mary’ for me every day, your prayers and support are much appreciated! I am grateful for all of you! You are my family!

As advertised earlier, we will have First Friday Holy Hour every month. For July we will have the Holy Hour on the 7th, Friday at 6pm. Please help us spread the news as it is important for our parish phase Eucharistic Renewal along with our monthly talks. The next talk will be on July 12th, 6:30pm and the speaker is Monsignor Seamus Brennen. Monsignor Brennon served as parochial vicar at our parish from 1974 -1981 at the time as Monsignor Joseph Sheehan (1971-1979) and Monsignor Michael Corona (1979-2009). Monsignor Brennen is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a priest. It will be a great time to congratulate him and pray for him. He will be reflecting about ‘Eucharist and Holiness: Eucharist and community-building through ministries of Church.’

I thank you for your continued support and prayers to the projects that are going on: installing new metal doors at the Mercy Hall building and a new fire alarm system for the School. We will update you with more news and pictures.

The Papal preacher Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa observed that the Gospel and also the First reading this weekend are summarized in a contradictory phrase, ‘Have fear but do not be afraid. We must not be afraid of, nor fear human beings; we must fear God but not be afraid of him. Though peripherally our present time is ‘the age of anxiety ’ (W H Auden) we as church live in the age of the Holy Spirit. Let us confidently say, ‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.’

¡Querida Familia!

Cada año celebramos la Semana de la Libertad Religiosa. Este año lo observamos del 22 al 29 de junio. Comienza con la fiesta de Santo Tomás Moro y San Juan Fisher (Ambos el 22 de junio) y también celebramos la Natividad de San Juan Bautista el 24 de junio (los únicos otros cumpleaños que celebramos en la Iglesia Católica son el nacimiento de nuestro Señor y de nuestra Santísima Madre) y terminan con la solemnidad de san Pedro y san Pablo. Si observamos a todas estas personalidades, es obvio por qué celebramos la Semana de la Libertad Religiosa.

Este año nos enfocamos en “Abrazar el regalo divino de la libertad” como tema. Cada día de esta semana tiene su propio enfoque y oración. El 22 de junio reflexionamos y oramos sobre el respeto a los espacios sagrados; el 23 en el sello de la confesión; el 24 por las necesidades de Nicaragua; el 25 para grupos de estudiantes religiosos; el 26 por la libertad religiosa en Nigeria; el 27 para la fe en los trabajos y negocios y el 28 nuestras oraciones y enfoque estarán en el servicio a inmigrantes y refugiados. Por último, pero no menos importante, el 29 de junio reflexionamos y oramos por atención médica católica.

Como les escribí la semana pasada con respecto a las buenas noticias de identificar a la nueva directora, les pido que lean mi carta de invitación para darle la bienvenida y también agradecer a la Sra. Kucinski por su liderazgo el domingo 16 de julio. Habrá una misa especial de acción de gracias a las 11 am para ambas y una recepción en Mercy Hall después de la misa.

Hemos sido bendecidos con muchas celebraciones, especialmente de nuestro clero: el primer aniversario del diácono Francisco como diácono fue el 14 de mayo; El diácono Rob celebró su sexto aniversario de diaconado el 18 de mayo; El diácono Larry celebró su 11º aniversario el 9 de junio y, por supuesto, tuvimos una gran celebración del 25º aniversario de la ordenación diaconal del diácono Enock el 13 de junio. El 28 de junio estaré celebrando mi 20 aniversario de Ordenación Sacerdotal. Tendremos una misa de acción de gracias a las 11 am y una recepción después de la misa el domingo 2 de julio.

Como el Padre John les aconsejó a todos que rezaran un 'Avemaría' por mí todos los días, ¡sus oraciones y apoyo son muy apreciados! ¡Estoy agradecido por todos ustedes! ¡Ustedes son mi familia!

Como se anunció anteriormente, tendremos la Hora Santa del primer viernes de cada mes. Para julio tendremos la Hora Santa viernes 7 de julio a las 6pm. Ayúdenos a difundir la noticia, ya que es importante para nuestra fase parroquial de Renovación Eucarística junto con nuestras charlas mensuales. La próxima charla será el 12 de julio a las 6:30 pm y el orador es Monseñor Seamus Brennen. Monseñor Brennen sirvió como vicario parroquial en nuestra parroquia de 1974 a 1981 al mismo tiempo con Monseñor Joseph Sheehan (1971-1979) y Monseñor Michael Corona (1979- 2009). Monseñor Brennen está celebrando su 50 aniversario como sacerdote. Será un gran momento para felicitarlo y orar por él. Estará reflexionando sobre 'Eucaristía y Santidad: Eucaristía y construcción de comunidad a través de los ministerios de la Iglesia'.

Les agradezco su continuo apoyo y oraciones a los proyectos que se están llevando a cabo: la instalación de nuevas puertas de metal en el edificio Mercy Hall y un nuevo sistema de alarma contra incendios para la escuela. Los actualizaremos con más noticias e imágenes.

El predicador papal, el cardenal Raniero Cantalamessa, observó que el Evangelio y también la Primera lectura de este fin de semana se resumen en una frase contradictoria: “Tened miedo pero no tengáis miedo. No debemos temer, ni temer a los seres humanos; debemos temer a Dios pero no tener miedo de él. Aunque periféricamente nuestro tiempo presente es "la era de la ansiedad" (WH Auden), nosotros, como iglesia, vivimos en la era del Espíritu Santo. Digamos con confianza: “El temor del Señor es el principio de la sabiduría”.
