First Sunday of Lent

Dear Family!

Many see Lent as a ‘Service Check.’ Though this imagery is very fitting, it is not the total picture of Lent. Lent is not a temporary adjustment that we make for a period of 40 days; nor it is a hibernation period for ‘hypocrites and tax-collectors’. The season of Lent is called the ‘Season of Grace’ since the season of Lent brings in a sense of urgency and utmost importance to be near God.

Lent is most often thought of as the preparation to the suffering and death of Jesus; Lent is also the preparation of Jesus’ and our own resurrection. The commitment that we show in taking part in the suffering and death of Our Lord reflects in God rewarding us with the Spirit of Resurrection.

The common benchmarks of all Christians who wear the Cross on their foreheads Lent consist of prayer, alms giving and fasting in a stricter sense. These three comprises the essence of our life: Prayer – our relationship with God, Almsgiving – our relationship with our neighbor and Fasting – our relationship with self. These three disciplines have a sense of generosity in them. We fast with a generous heart; give alms generously and pray with a generous heart.

This is not a season to fast our prayers; not a season to fast our generous giving its fasting on the desires of the self to make it the temple of the Holy Spirit. When we fast, we need to look happy. Joy is the gift of the Holy Spirit. The happy faces are the symbols of freshness and enduring faith in God.

Almsgiving is a wonderful form of giving. Our relationships need (alms) giving. What can I give to make him/her reflect God’s goodness, love, and generosity? Modeling on the total self-giving of Jesus, every giving during this season is a great sign of following Jesus. Lent is also a time where not only the quality of prayer, but also the quantity of prayer is stressed. Let us pray that this Lent takes us close to the Heart of God. We all need a share in His suffering and death to share His resurrection. Happy Lent!

Follow-up for Catholic School Week: We will be sending a group to the close-by parishes on following Sundays to spread the good word and attempt to increase our enrollment. It is our school, and all have the responsibility to work as a team to give the best for our children and be involved in Catholic Education. Please help us spread the word.

Eucharistic Revival Seminar is on February 20th 4:30pm: We cancelled our Eucharistic Revival Seminar last week due to inclement weather. We are planning to have this seminar on the 20th. It is titled “Foundational teachings from the Eucharistic Prayers.” We will have two priests ordained for our diocese. These young men are coming to our parish to talk to us of the importance of Eucharist from their vocational journey that helped them to become priests. These young priests are invited primarily to foster vocations in our parish - We will host this seminar in place of Faith Formation (CCD) so all the children and parents can attend this event. I request all parishioners to join us! Your presence will help the spirituality of our children. I continue to encourage community learning as it is indispensable for our faith.

Bible Study on Mark: All are welcome! Our next class will be on Feb 22nd, 5pm at Mercy Hall. This will immensely help you with your Sunday Mass experience as Year B reflects on Mark. There is a new Bible Study on the Acts of the Apostles starting February 29th. This will be in preparation for the Easter Season 2024.

Diaconate Ordination of Randy Gamboa Espinoza: Our bishop will be ordaining our Seminarian to the Diaconate on the 22nd of February at 7pm in Mary, Mother of God Church, Hillsborough. You are all invited for the mass and wish our future deacon the absolute best as he continues to grow and prepares himself to the ordination to priesthood. Please pray for him!

Ordinary Maintenance Projects: We are looking into removing of old carpet in our Chapel and replacing it with hardwood. We also need to do some maintenance work at the Sacristy. We are also looking into repairing the floor in Mercy Hall. These are all Ordinary Maintenance projects, something simple, not a major undertaking. Your prayers and support are always needed! If you would like to volunteer in any of these projects, you are most welcome to come talk to me by calling the church office to set up an appointment. ¡Querida familia!

Muchos ven la cuaresma como una “inspección”. Aunque esta imagen es muy apropiada, no es la imagen completa de la cuaresma. La cuaresma no es un ajuste temporal que hacemos por un período de 40 días; ni es un período de hibernación para los “hipócritas y recaudadores de impuestos”. El tiempo de cuaresma se llama el “tiempo de gracia” ya que trae un sentido de urgencia y suma importancia para estar cerca de Dios. A menudo se piensa que la cuaresma es la preparación para el sufrimiento y la muerte de Jesús; La cuaresma es también la preparación de la resurrección de Jesús y de la nuestra. El compromiso que mostramos al participar en el sufrimiento y la muerte de nuestro señor se refleja en que Dios nos recompensa con el espíritu de resurrección.

Los puntos de referencia comunes de todos los cristianos que llevan la cruz en la frente durante la cuaresma consisten en la oración, la limosna y el ayuno en un sentido más estricto. Estos tres componen la esencia de nuestra vida: oración, nuestra relación con Dios; limosna, nuestra relación con nuestro prójimo y ayuno, nuestra relación con uno mismo. Estas tres disciplinas tienen un sentido de generosidad. Ayunamos con un corazón generoso; da limosna generosamente y orad con corazón generoso.

Este no es un tiempo para ayunar nuestras oraciones o de nuestra generosa donación pero si de nuestros deseos del uno para convertirnos en templo del Espíritu Santo. Cuando ayunamos, debemos parecer felices. La alegría es el don del Espíritu Santo. Los rostros felices son símbolos de frescura y fe duradera en Dios.

La limosna es una forma maravillosa de dar. Nuestras relaciones necesitan dar (limosna). ¿Qué puedo dar para que refleje la bondad, el amor y la generosidad de Dios? Siguiendo el modelo de la entrega total de Jesús, cada donación durante esta temporada es una gran señal de seguir a Jesús. La cuaresma es también un tiempo en el que no sólo se enfatiza la calidad de la oración, sino también el tiempo que se dedica a la oración. Oremos para que esta cuaresma nos acerquemos al corazón de Dios.Todos necesitamos compartir Su sufrimiento y muerte para compartir Su resurrección. ¡Feliz Cuaresma!

Seguimiento de la Semana de la Escuela Católica: Enviaremos un grupo a las parroquias cercanas en los próximos domingos para difundir la buena palabra e intentar aumentar nuestra inscripción. Es nuestra escuela, y todos tenemos la responsabilidad de trabajar en equipo para dar lo mejor a nuestros niños e involucrarnos en la educación católica. Por favor, ayúdenos a difundir la palabra. Avivamiento Eucarístico es el 20 de febrero a las 4:30pm: Cancelamos nuestra charla de Avivamiento Eucarístico la semana pasada debido al mal tiempo. Estamos planeando tener esta charla el día 20. Se titula “Enseñanzas fundamentales de las oraciones eucarísticas”. Tendremos dos sacerdotes ordenados de nuestra diócesis. Estos jóvenes vienen a nuestra parroquia para hablarnos de la importancia de la Eucaristía desde su camino vocacional que los ayudó a ser sacerdotes. Estos jóvenes sacerdotes están invitados principalmente a fomentar las vocaciones en nuestra parroquia. Organizaremos este seminario en lugar de Formación de Fe (CCD) para que todos los niños y padres puedan asistir a este evento. ¡Solicito a todos los feligreses que se unan a nosotros! Tu presencia ayudará a la espiritualidad de nuestros hijos. Sigo fomentando el aprendizaje comunitario, ya que es indispensable para nuestra fe

Estudio Bíblico sobre Marcos: ¡Todos son bienvenidos! Nuestra próxima clase será el 22 de febrero a las 5pm en Mercy Hall. Esto te ayudará enormemente con tu experiencia en la Misa dominical mientras el año B reflexiona sobre Marcos. Hay un nuevo estudio bíblico sobre los Hechos de los Apóstoles a partir del 29 de febrero. Esto será en preparación para la temporada de pascua de 2024.

Ordenación diaconal de Randy Gamboa Espinoza: Nuestro obispo ordenará a nuestro Seminarista al Diaconado el 22 de febrero a las 7 pm en la Iglesia María, Madre de Dios, Hillsborough. Están todos invitados a la misa y le desean lo mejor a nuestro futuro diácono mientras continúa creciendo y preparándose para la ordenación al sacerdocio. ¡Por favor oren por él!

Proyectos de mantenimiento: Estamos considerando quitar la alfombra vieja de nuestra capilla y reemplazarla con madera. También necesitamos hacer algunos trabajos de mantenimiento en la sacristía y estamos considerando reparar el piso en Mercy Hall. Todos estos son proyectos de mantenimiento son algo simple y no una gran labor. ¡Sus oraciones y apoyo siempre son necesarios! Si desea ser voluntario en cualquiera de estos proyectos, puede venir a hablar conmigo llamando a la oficina de la iglesia para programar una cita.
